Hyatt Regency, Buffalo NY - July 2

Rating - 7.2

We arrived later at night (around 9:30 pm) after our trip to the falls. It is an easy drive back downtown, probably between 15-20 minutes.

However, arriving downtown Buffalo at night is a bit scary. The first thing I noticed was that it was empty, hardly anyone around; second was that it was a bit rough and run down. There was nothing going on at all.

When we arrived at the hotel to check in I had to unload the mini van. I went inside and found a doorman who was helpful, however they DO NOT HAVE VALET parking. He told me I could park in the lot across the street, and that it was the safest one because they had 24 hour security. That did not leave me with a good feeling.

It was on the next corner, but I had to drive around the block and there was a raging party at the bar on the corner, lots of young people in attendance, and cops on all the corners. When I got into the lot, I pre-paid and was told I was good for the night and next day (I believe it was $18). However, when I got the car in the morning I had to pay again to get out.....some scam is going on there.

As for the hotel, everyone was extremely friendly and went out of their way to make sure we were happy....and I mean everyone from the front desk to the bar tender. The property itself is like Buffalo, its been around a long time and is pretty beat-down. It shows its age in many different ways - worn walls and carpeting and dated fixtures. The rooms themselves are nice, and the bed was great. I snuck down to the bar for a few drinks after the kids went to bed and service was warm and friendly.

We had breakfast the next morning in the lobby restaurant and the SERVICE was EXCELLENT, the food was really good, but it was a expensive for the family ($60)...that price may fly in Manhattan, but not in Buffalo.

As I checked out I was again amazed at how the staff was to all of us. If I ever went back to Buffalo on business I would try and stay outside of the city, and I didn't see many other hotels in the area to stay at.

I was glad to park the car and get on our way to the Cape.

Lobby Bar is staffed by an awesome bartender named Tricia.....she is friendly and efficient.

Hard Rock Cafe - Niagara Falls, NY - July 2

Rating - 6.9

After spending 3 hours in the Park we needed to get some dinner for everyone. The restaurant is a 15 minute walk from the Maid of the Mist (all up hill) and we waited too long to get there. We arrived around 8:30 and were seated.

It is a traditional Hard rock, various rock memorabilia all over the walls, and all tourists in attendance. Remember when the Hard Rock shirts were the coolest thing to have in the wardrobe?

My marg was marginal at best, and service was pretty slow. I would guess it took half an hour for the food to arrive. It was also just ok, but we were so hungry it didn't matter. Then it took a long time to get the check. I would not return, but it is the best food near the American falls (you can eat in the park, but it way overpriced and is hot dogs/pizza).

Niagara Falls USA, Maid of the Mist - July 2

Rating - 10.0

This is a family favorite and a tradition at that. After getting soaked at the cave we took a 10 minute walk over to the Maid of the Mist. Luckily it was late in the evening and had rained so there was no wait. They had signs up about July 3 being their busiest day every year, and had the crowd barriers setup for people to wait....I would have to imagine the wait has to be a few hours.

Anyway, we put our ponchos on again and boarded the boat. It was a windy day, and we were once again soaked when the boat arrived at the Canadian Horseshoe falls (Katie took the little
guy inside to get out of the mist).

But the KIDS LOVED IT......this is a MUST DO for any FAMILY.

I would guess the entire trip took around 30 minutes to complete.

Niagara Falls State Park, Cave of the Winds - July 2

Rating - 9.00

What a fun time this was!! We arrived at the park around 5 pm and parked for free. We walked down to the Cave of the Winds and put on our ponchos and flip flops they give you, and thank goodness we had those....it is a very WET walk right next to the American Falls (just to the West side), but the Kids LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

Its all done on wooden steps and depending on your tolerance for getting soaked you can actually walk "inside/under" one of the streams running down. I was soaked to the bone.

But it was GREAT and I would do it again in a second.....Katie on the other hand would never go again.....
